The No Más Bebés: Film Screening & Panel Discussion Was A Complete Success
What an thought-provoking event! It was a packed house as we presented the film "No Más Bebés," which is the story of Mexican immigrant mothers who sued county doctors, the state, and the U.S. Government after they were sterilized while giving birth at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center during the 1970’s. We could not have presented this film nor our amazing panelists without the support of our members, our friends, our family and USF Law. The film is so powerful and meaningful, that we fully recommend it to those that have not watched it. We would like to send a very special THANK YOU to our panelists for their poignant thoughts and for their wealth of knowledge.
And also, with deep gratitude to our wonderful co-sponsors for helping us bring this event to life: USF Immigration Law Society, USF Law Students for Reproductive Justice, USF CELASA, USF Chican@-Latin@ Studies, USF Center for Law and Ethics, Student Bar Association, USF Office of Student Affairs, and USF Diversity Engagement and Community Outreach. Member Of The SemesterCongratulations to our first "Member of the Semester" inductee for Fall 2015! Meet Agustin Vega-Peters, our 1L Representative who tackled his first semester like a Boss!! Here's our interaction:
What drove you to law school? My drive came from a combination of family and work experience, which ultimately tied together. Through my time volunteering and working for a variety of non-profits, I began to see reoccurring issues affecting the same groups of people. Their legal issues and problems overcoming them reflected the same issues I had seen my family face while growing up. I felt the best way tackle these problems was to address them in a legal setting where I hope to deconstruct the systematic ways the problems have taken root and grown. What has helped you succeed so far in your first year? I'd have to say balance. I've done my best to try to balance my studies, my personal life, and my spirituality/health. What do you look forward to doing in terms of legal work? I look forward to addressing issues such as housing discrimination, language discrimination, and working with Spanish speaking and Indigenous populations. Why join La Raza? I was attracted to the energy coming from the group and felt I could both draw and give back to this energy during my time here. What does being Latino mean to you? I have mixed feelings about Latinx. In terms of creating solidarity, I see and appreciate the need for the creation of a strong collective identity to bond people together in taking on social issues. In terms of my personal identity, Latinx seems to subtlety reinforce the erasure of Indigenous identity from a larger global context by emphasizing a Eurocentric history.
Meeting Of The Minds2016 starts off right with the coming together of leadership and ideas. Board Members from USF La Raza, Golden Gate La Raza, UC Hastings La Raza and Berkeley La Raza meet to discuss future collaborative events, community involvement and unity.
